Vendace (Coregonus albula (L.)) is found in several Latvian lakes and is included in a list of specially protected species with restricted use in Latvia. However, a lack of basic data on the biology and population status of these populations hinders the sustainable use of this fish and national efforts to manage its populations. The RAPD technique was used to evaluate genetic diversity among individuals of three vendace populations from Latvian lakes to assess intra-specific genetic variation. The analysis revealed statistically significant genetic variation among vendace individuals from Lakes Sventes, Rāznas and Nirzas. We assumed that genetic drift or natural selection were the main factors affecting the genetic differentiation of populations.
