Following the discovery of the poorly - understood Closterium infractum Messik. in three widely scattered global habitats - west Ireland, New Zealand and the central Malaysian Peninsula, the opportunity has been taken to compare the cells found, to comment on descriptions and illustrations made by other desmid specialists and to make a new combination in the genus Actinotaenium.
