A historical survey is given of how Aphanizomenon flos-aquae developed from an organism first considered neither important nor useful or dangerous into an indicator of good fish ponds, then eventually into a rarity in special lakes, finally into an unwelcome pollution. In spite of the fact that natural populations may contain poisonous strains this blue-green is sold without hindrance as bio-product for human supplementary nutrition.
