This work is a taxonomic survey of the classes Xanthophyceae and Euglenophyceae in the periphytic community of the floating macrophyte Ricciocarpus natans, a first approach in this area of study. The substrate was collected in a backwater in the Paraná River floodplain during two hydrological periods: high water (February 2008) and low water (June 2008). The analysis of the periphytic material allowed the identification of 26 taxa in total, of which 11 belonged to the Class Xanthophyceae and 15 to the Class Euglenophyceae. Two taxa are cited for the first time for Brazil: Characiopsis falx (Xanthophyceae) and Trachelomonas saccata (Euglenophyceae). Moreover, 16 taxa are recorded for the first time for the Paraná River floodplain: Characiopsis acuta, C. aquilonaris, C. elegans, C. microcysticola, C. minutissima, C. pyriformis var. subsessilis, Akanthochloris scherffelii and Ophiocytium capitatum (Xanthophyceae), Phacus polytrophos, P. stokesii var. minor, Trachelomonas curta var. curta, T. hispida var. duplex, T. hispida var. hispida, T. pseudobulla var. bulloides, T. robusta and T. verrucosa var. granulosa (Euglenophyceae).
