New records of the genus Oedogonium (Oedogoniales; Chlorophyceae) from West Bengal, India

Abstract

During a study of algal biodiversity of rice fields of Sagar Island (The Sunderbans) the authors collected 54 taxa of Oedogonium Link (Chlorophyceae). Thirteen taxa including 1 new species (Oedogonium sagarense sp. nov.) of the genus Oedogonium are described in the present communication. They are: Oedogonium autumnale var. subrupestre Jao 1942, Oe. chaetophorum Hoff. 1969, Oe. gunnii var. breviarticulatum Jao 1937, Oe. kozminskii var. targaonense Isl. & Sarma 1965, Oe. longatum K tz. ex Hirn 1900, Oe. oblongellum var. minus (Taft) Mrozińska 1985, Oe. ouchitanum Taft 1935, Oe. polistandrium Jao 1979, Oe. rigidum f. africanum Gauth.-Lièv. 1963–64, Oe. spiripennatum Jao 1934, Oe. spurium Hirn 1900 and Oe. suborbiculare var. kamalapurense Isl. 1965. All of these are new records for the Indian algal flora.
