Contribution to a broadening of taxonomical and ecological knowledge on Woronichinia naegeliana (Unger) Elenkin

In the present studies, taxonomic and ecological aspects of Woronichinia naegeliana are discussed. The ultrastructure (in TEM) of a cell of the above species is also included. The material was collected from plankton of a dam reservoir in southern Poland. W. naegeliana belongs to commonly planktic free-living, buoyant species being able to form surface water blooms in eutrophic and mesotrophic lakes and ponds. It is one of three species of genus Woronichinia possessing gas vesicles. As it is shown in TEM, these organielles are distributed throughout the cell.
