Cosmarium woloszynskae, originally described by J. Woloszyńska from Polish Würm glacial deposits as Cosmarium difficile Lütkem. formae minutissimae, is described as a new species. It was encountered in a Dutch coastal dune hollow under rather hard local environmental conditions, i.e., bare sand soil alternately water-immersed and drying out. Possible taxonomic affiliations are considered. The appearance of fine cell wall sculpturing in light-microscopical images of smooth-walled Cosmarium species in general is discussed.
