Taxonomic survey of representatives of genus Strombomonas (Euglenophyceae) of a reservoir in the municipality of Triunfo (30° 02' 15"S, 51° 13' 13"W), state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Samplings were made at 2 stations during 14 consecutive months, from February 1995 to March 1996. Fourteen taxa were identified at specific and infraspecific levels, which were distributed in 8 species, 4 varieties that are not typical of their respective species and 2 taxonomic formae that are not also the typical of their respective varieties. Strombomonas verrucosa and S. triquetra var. torta were the two most representative taxa in the reservoir since they occurred, respectively, in 84 % and 62 % of the total sample units studied. The greatest species richness in the genus was observed during the summer and fall of 1995. A new species to science, S. simplex sp. nova, is presently proposed. Variation spectrum of the environmental variables under which each taxon was collected is presented.
