Two common cyanobacteria genera, Microcystis and Woronichinia, were studied using scanning electron microscopy in relation to their ultra-structural differences. We showed tubular stalks which are characteristic for Woronichinia, but they were absent in Microcystis, and noted differences in the mucilage associated with these two taxa. There were also bacteria within the colonies of both genera.
