Ingestion of an artificial particle (polystyrene beads) and a natural food particle (the planktonic alga Chlorella homosphtaera) was investigated in 4th instar larvae of the culicid mosquito Culex quinquejasciatus. Two methods of particle counting were used (flow cytometer and light microscopy) and compared to each other. The methods gave similar results indicating that they give reliable estimations. The larvae were selective but only weakly so, showing a slight selection of the algae over the beads. No greater ability to discriminate against inert particles seems to exist in Cx. quinquejasciatus.
