Abstract

High, but quite variable, prevalences and burdens of euglenoid epibionts, Colacium sp., were observed on the rotifer Keratella cochlearis Gosse in coastal inlets in Åland, southwest Finland in the summer 1994. In the middle of the summer, epibiont prevalences often reached 80-100 %, and frequently more than 20 Colacium cells occurred per substrate animal. However, in one of seven basins studied, prevalences were long below 3 %. The prevalence of Colacium epibionts correlated with the density of K. cochlearis. No clear relation to water quality was observed; in the most eutrophic basin, epibionts were first abundant in June but absent in August.
