The International Seaweed Symposium is the main congress worldwide dedicated almost exclusively to studies of marine macroalgae, with emphasis on economically interesting species. As in the former cases, the Proceedings of the Sixteenth International Seaweed Symposium held in Cebu City, Philippines, in April 1998, have been published rapidly, i.e. after a bit more than one year, in volume 398/399 of Hydrobiologia and volume 11 of the Journal of Applied Phycology. These volumes are combined in a well-bound hardcover consisting of 50 introductory pages and 650 pages of scientific contributions. Table of contents and list of all congress registrants with post and email addresses form the major part of the introduction, in addition to useful information in relation to the organisation of and support for the congress.
