In memoriam Dr. Annie Duncan (1926-2000)

Burgis, Mary

Nan Duncan died on 3rd October 2000, fifteen months after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage from which she never recovered. It is typical of Nan that, at the age of 72, she was found at 11 p. m. still in her laboratory, but collapsed over her computer. At the time she was the initiator and principal coordinator of a complex project funded by the EU (FISHSTRAT) which embraced numerous colleagues from three European and three SE Asian countries. This, too, epitomises Nan's life; she was not only a good scientist in her own right but her greater contribution was the gift of stimulating people to work together, achieving results which none of them could have obtained alone.
