Abstract

The respiration rates of Chaoborus flavicans instar IV were measured in a flow-through respirometer at oxygen concentrations between 5 % and 100 % saturation at an experimental temperature of 20 °C. The respiration rate of the instar IV followed a hyperbolic function with the critical point at an oxygen saturation of 15 %. Thus, C. flavicans instar IV appeared to be an oxy-regulator and maintained the aerobic pathway even under low oxygen saturations. On their diel vertical migration in stratified lakes, the larvae should be able to use even small amounts of oxygen.
