Reconsideration of Wiedemannia and notes on the circumscription of Lamium (Lamiaceae)
published: Apr 2, 2003
The interrelationship of the genus Lamium is investigated using cladistic analysis. The result suggests that the European to West Asiatic species of Lamium (excl. L. galeobdolon (L.) L.) form a monophyletic group together with the genus Wiedemannia, and that Lamium is paraphyletic with Wiedemannia as a subgroup. In agreement with this result, Wiedemannia is here amalgamated with Lamium. The infrageneric classification of Lamium and the generic positions of Lamium galeobdolon, L. humile (Miq.) Maxim., L. nepalense Hedge, L. staintonii Hedge, L. tuberiferum (Makino) Ohwi and L. tuberosum Hedge as well as some other presumed Lamium relatives are discussed. Wiedemannia multifida (L.) Benth. and W. orientale Fisch. & C.A.Mey. should be known by the names Lamium multifidum L. and L. orientale (Fisch. & C.A.Mey.) E.H.L.Krause, respectively.
