A new uncalcified macroalga, Haeringiella multifidiformis gen. et sp. nov., is described from the lower Oligocene (Tertiary) of Bad Häring in Tyrol (Austria). The thallus consists of a central axis that produces irregularly ramifying lateral branches; the basal part is slightly broadened and forms a flat holdfast. Similarities in basic morphology exist between the fossil and certain extant phaeophytes and rhodophytes. Haeringiella multifidiformis represents the only compelling fossil alga recorded to date for the famous Tertiary plant locality at Bad Häring.
