A new subgeneric classification of the genus Eryngium L. (Apiaceae, Saniculoideae)
published: Aug 12, 2005
In this paper, a new subgeneric classification of the genus Eryngium L. is presented. It is based on morphological data. Five subgenera are accepted: Eryngium subg. Eryngium, Eryngium subg. Fruticosa, Eryngium subg. Monocotyloidea, Eryngium subg. Semiaquatica, Eryngium subg. Foetida, the latter three described here as new to science. These subgenera reflect the main evolutionary lineages. Eryngium subg. Eryngium occurs in Europe, Western Asia and North Africa, the other four subgenera mostly in the New World and in Australia.
