Abstract

Abstract Diffuse reflectance (Rd) spectrometry in the visible spectrum under the microscope permits the rapid determination of trace amounts (not measurable with the electron microprobe) of four-fold coordinated Co2+ in powdered sphalerites with low iron contents (< 1 at.%). The relation between the remission function (f(r)) and the Co2+ content is linear, even for very low concentrations (- 10 ppm), where f(r) = (l-Rd)2/2Rd at 725 nm, after substraction of the background at 620 nm.
