Abstract

Abstract Through systematic sampling in a quarry of Neapolitan yellow tuff, the stratigraphic variation of both abundance and chemical composition of zeolites (mainly phillipsite and chabazite) has been analysed. The natural zeolitization process is discussed on this basis, with regard to the possible emplacement mechanism of the original volcanic material. Variable relative abundance of zeolites throughout the deposit restricts its uso to applications where only general zeolite properties are required, or where phillipsite and chabazite show the same behaviour
