Speciation and amphoteric behaviour of water in aluminosilicate melts and glasses: high-temperature Raman spectroscopy and reaction equilibria

Combination of Raman spectroscopy and theoretical considerations give fundamental insights about water incorporation within the structure of aluminosilicate melts and glasses. Raman spectroscopy allows quantifying both water concentration and speciation. Particularly, it highlights the existence of OH groups differently bonded to (Si, Al) network formers and networkmodifying cations, thus confirming previous results obtained by NMR spectroscopy, for instance. In situ experiments using Raman spectroscopy on basalt, rhyolite and albite melts show that the water speciation is profoundly affected by temperature, and that the amphoteric behaviour of water drives its diffusion and exsolution processes.
