Abstract

Abstract Petrographic and chemical methods are used to characterize ancient plasters from the church of San Niccolo di Comelico (Belluno - Northern Italy). The results obtained by optical microscopy show that sand (with quartz and calcite) was used as a filler. XRD patterns show the presence of dolomite. The chemical analyses indicate a magnesian lime was used as a binder. A comparison of results from the different methods reveals some plaster features. A distinction between original plaster and remakes is also possible.
