Abstract Bands dominated by either quartz or Fe-minerals were separated and analysed for rare-earth elements (by ICP-MS) and Fe (by INAA) from a 25 cm long drill core section from the Palaeoproterozoic Kuruman Iron-Formation, South Africa. Fe/La, Eu/Sm and Sm/Yb ratios were found to be highly variable, thus providing valuable information on rare-earth element behavior during precipitation, diagenesis and low-grade metamorphism of Precambrian iron-formations (IFs), as well as on methodological aspects of investigations into the trace element geochemistry of IFs in general.
