Abstract A detailed transmission electron microscopic study of deformation lamellae in quartz from arenitic samples of Rooiberg Group strata in the Stavoren Fragment of the Bushveld Complex is reported. The results demonstrate that this deformation phenomenon does not represent shock metamorphic deformation, but is likely of tectonic origin. Thus, an origin by impact of the Bushveld Complex has, to date, not been supported by any unambiguous findings of impact-diagnostic shock metamorphic deformation effects
