Abstract

Sibships of a moth Arctia caja Linnaeus 1758 (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) differed significantly in average body mass and in within-brood variability in body mass as early as first-instar larvae measured soon after hatching. In addition, broods fathered by larger males were more variable in body mass. Consequences of intrabrood variability for larval sibling egg cannibalism are discussed.
