Larval Food Spectra of Pterostichus oblongopunctatus and P. rhaeticus in the Field (Coleoptera: Carabidae)
Schelvis, Jaap; Siepel, Hendrik
Larval food items of 2 related ground beetle species, Pterostichus oblongopunctatus (Fabricius 1787) and P. rhaeticus Heer 1811, have been studied in the field. The larval gut contents have been examined using iso-enzyme electrophoresis (IEEP). Field data have been compared with data of laboratory experiments on food acceptance of reared ground beetle larvae (L). L of both species appeared to be oligophagous. Preferred food items were relatively soft bodied small invertebrates like L of Diptera and Coleoptera, small Oligochaeta and Acari: Mesostigmata. IEEP appears to be a useful qualitative technique in studying food items of ground beetle L in the field.
