Response of Apterous Potato Aphids to Visual Contrasts (Hemiptera: Aphididae)
[Reaktion ungeflügelter Kartoffelblattläuse auf visuelle Unterschiede (Hemiptera: Aphididae)]
Döring, T. F; Schmidt, T
In order to investigate effects of visual contrasts on aphids [Döring et al 2004] under laboratory conditions, potato aphids (Aulacorthum solani Kaltenbach 1843) were observed in choice tests with green targets on visually different backgrounds. Aphids were reared on potato plants at 19ºC under a 12:12 h light regime. A transparent plastic tank (25 cm high, 20 cm wide, and 40 cm long) was lined with black cardboard on the inner surfaces, except a small observation window situated at the upper end of the 25 x 20 cm back side of the tank. During experimental runs the arena was covered with a flat black lid, in the middle of which a hole was made for the illumination source, a white light, UV emitting Arcadia Bird Lamp. Adult apterous aphids were taken from the culture, carefully placed into a Petri dish for starving, and after 1 h, 15 animals were transferred from the dish into a 2 cm long, 2 ml transparent plastic vial.
