Population Density and Microhabitat Selection in the Ground Beetle Species Brachinus crepitans (Coleoptera: Carabidae)

Abstract
Brachinus crepitans Linnaeus 1758 is a species of dry,open habitats. Previous studies have shown that in Croatia,this species inhabits open habitats, but is not restricted to dry habitats. The objective of this study was to investigate the distribution and seasonal dynamics of B crepitans at four sites with varying vegetation types around a small,shallow aquatic area. Pitfall traps and the capture-recapture methods were used.The results show that B crepitans prefers open, periodically flooded habitats,though it was also found in dense, closed complexes with Amorpha fruticosa. Seasonal dynamics varied from those observed in Central Europe. Population density was estimated at 1.42 beetles m- 2.
Abstract (German)
Obwohl Brachinus crepitans Linnaeus 1758 als ein Bewohner trockener und offener Habitate bekannt ist, zeigten frühere Studien, daß sein Vorkommen in Kroatien nicht nur auf trockene Gebiete begrenzt ist. Zielsetzung dieser Arbeit war es deshalb, sowohl die Verteilung als auch die jahreszeitlich bedingte Dynamik dieser Laufkäferart an vier Standorten mit unterschiedlichen Vegetationstypen um ein kleines Altwasser herum zu untersuchen. Die verwendete Methode basiert auf Fang und Wiederfang unter Einsatz von Lebendfallen. Die gewonnenen Daten zeigen,daß B crepitans offene, periodisch überflutete Habitate bevorzugt, aber auch in den geschlossenen Beständen mit Amorpha fructicosa vorkommt. Die jahreszeitlich bedingte Dynamik unterscheidet sich von der in Mitteleuropa beobachteten. Die Populationsdichte beträgt 1.42 Bombardierkäfer pro m 2.
