Abstract

The study of butterflies in southern Jordan is summarised, and the limitations of current knowledge in relation to conservation concern are stressed. Recent legislative measures involving the conservation of butterflies in southern Jordan are itemised and discussed. Species-orientated conservation cases are still rare, but the roles of several taxa in increasing political and public conservation awareness are outlined. The concept of butterfly conservation in Jordan is reviewed. A summary is given for the dramatic changes that have occurred to the Jordanian terrestrial environments since the last period of time, and for some factors leading to butterfly decline in recent years.
