The compilation of metallogenic maps has not been uniform so far. The lUGS Commission for the Geological Map of the World, Subcommission for the Metallogenic Map of the World, chaired by P. W. Guild, has advocated adoption of a uniform global legend but differences still exist among the national schools and individuals (Guild, Global Tect. and Metal., vol. 1, No. 1, p . 10-15, 1978). Planning for this map began in 1964, and a consensus among the participants regarding the map content and its expression was reached by 1 969. The actual preparation then lasted some ten years. The map was finally released in 1 981 in this preliminary version. The map is preliminary, as Guild explains in Circular 858A, because the international contributors have not had the opportunity to check the map in detail before the publication_ The reproduction is preliminary too- it is essentially a hand colored map, generated by a rapid electronic scanning method. My first reaction to the new map has been a feeling of relief that the map is finally here. The base map is identical with that of the Geologic and Tectonic Maps of North America (N. Amer. Geol. Map. Comm. 1965; King 1969), so all three maps can be easily matched.
