Kutina's (1980) theory concerning the importance of the latitude of the Mendocino Fracture Zone in the control of mineral districts in the Western United States was tested in northwestern Nevada by subjecting the Granite Mountain area to a detailed geophysical survey. An intermittent three years survey, aimed at recognizing possible presence of so far undiscovered, hidden mineral deposits, has revealed three areas of major geophysical anomalies. These areas, counted from NW to the SE are referred to as the Jasperoid Peak area, the Kennedy area, and the Kennedy Pass (or -c KP>-) area. The paper presents reconnaissance and detai led results. Most of the data consists of variable frequency induced polarization and resistivity results; some phase IP data and Spectral IP data, using a truck·mounted spectral system, are also included. The analysis of geophysical data permitted a prediction that the geophysical anomaly in the Kennedy area corresponds to a major deposit of "porphyry copper" type mineralization. Drilling in the site of the geophysical anomaly, conducted by W. A. Bowes, proved the existence of porphyry·type copper·molybdenum mineralization. The other two anomalies, the Jasperoid Peak and the Kennedy Pass, warrant further investigation.


La theorie de Kutina (1 980) concernant I'importance de la Mendocino Fracture Zone dans le controle des districts miniers de l'Ouest de Etats·Unis, a ete testee dans Ie nord·ouest Nevada en soumettant la region de Granite Mountain a une etude geophysique detaillee. Une etude intermittente etalee sur trois ans, qui avait pour but de reconnaitre la presence possible de depOts miniers caches, a revele trois zones d'anomalies geophysiques majeures. Du NW au SE (fig. 1 ), ces anomalies sont respectivement: la region de Jasperoid Peak; celie de Kennedy; et celie de «KP... Ce travail presente les resultats des etudes de reconnaissance et des etudes detaillees. La plupart des donnees pro· viennent des resultats de I'analyse des frequences variables de polarisation et de resistivite induites. Certaines donnees de polarisation induite de phase et de polarisation induite spectrale utilisant un systeme spectral monte sur camion, sont aussi presentees. L'analyse des donnees geophysiques permet de predire que I'anomalie geophysique de la region de Kennedy correspond a un depôt mineral ise majeur, de type «porphyry copper... Le sondage dans Ie site de I'anomalie geophysique, conduit par W.A. Bowes, a prouve I'existence d'une mineralisation de type porphyry en molybdene-cuivre. Les deux autres anomalies, Jasperoid Peak et «KP.., justifient une etude ulterieure.
