Study on the dynamic mechanism of the Quinghai-Xizang (Tibet) Plateau uplift

The author has designed and computed a dynamic model of the uplift of the Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) Plateau. The model is based on the characteristics of the plateau uplift and the results of other investigators, combined with a map of mantle creep current and the values of tangent stress as exerted on the bottom of the lithosphere, the latter calculated from satellite gravity data. The results show that the mantle creep current under the plateau converges from its border areas, mainly in the northsouth direction; that the crust is heated, and a mixed melt of crust-mantle layers is formed; that the plateau is uplifted and thickened by the isostatic adjustment of gravity and the convergence and depression of mantle current in the N-S direction. By computing the above model, the viscosity factors (Eta = 10 hoch 18 - 10 hoch 20 Pa· s) of the mantle current under the plateau have been obtained. They are in the same numerical order as those received by other authors through studies of the postglacial rebound data. The mean rate of the mantle current (v = 5.26 cm/a) which creeps north-south and was obtained by calculation, is relatively identical with the movement rate of the Indian plate towards the north, as revealed by the studies of others. Finally, the recent uplift rate of the plateau has been calculated. Its predicted value is 7 mm/a, coinciding with that obtained by practical measurements.
