The name of Alexei Dmitrievich Shcheglov is closely connected with the establishment and development of the International Association on the Genesis of Ore Deposits (IAGOD). The roots of this association are in the symposium "Problems of Postmagmatic Ore Deposition" held in Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1963. At this meeting, about three hundred scientists from both the West and East, North and South, with a USSR delegation of about eighty people, spontaneously expressed a wish that the international cooperation as developed through the symposium would not end by simply publishing its results. To organize continuation of a true international cooperation, the symposium participants voted for creation of a Provisional Commission on the Genesis of Ore Deposits. One year later, at the International Geological Congress in New Delhi, 1964, the Provisional Commission was changed into an international association (IAGOD). Its statutes were approved and a formal affiliation with the IUGS established. A friendly agreement between Professor Charles F. Park, Jr., then-President of the Society of Economic Geologists, and Academician V. I. Smirnov, Chairman of the Ore Geology Committee of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, played a crucial role in the establishment of the Association.
