Five years ago, Song and Richards reported evidence for differential inner core rotation from time-dependent seismic waves through the inner core. A growing body of evidence now supports the faster rotation of the inner core relative to the mantle. A westward rotation can be ruled out. The current estimates of the rotation rate range from 0.15 to 1.1 deg/yr. With a unique opportunity to observe motions at depth within the core, a detectable inner core rotation has direct implications for the dynamics of the earth's deep interior.
