The main functions of the IAD - a 40-years-old affiliated association of the International Association of Theoretical and Applied Limnology (SIL) - are innovatory steering and coordination of limnological research within the Danube river basin, as well as the realisation of water quality objectives gained in practice by the scientific representatives of the IAD-member-nations. According to special decadic programmes, ecological studies will be carried out in order to obtain a stepwise improvement of Danube water quality. Future control and biomonitoring, decisions by national committees or personal members of the IAD for preventing damage to the river ecosystem, as well as controlling its resources, will contribute enormously to future water management of the Danube.
