The founder of the International Association for Danube Research (IAD-SIL) has died. Arising from the necessity to support and co-ordinate increasing activities in the areas of limnology, water resources management and protection against pollution in the countries bordering the River Danube, Professor Liepolt from Vienna founded the IAD in 1956 at the 13th congress of the SIL in Helsinki, together with the most prominent hydrobiologists of his time and experts on water conservation in the Danube area. Three years later the IAD was accepted into the SIL as an independent, affiliated member with its own status. Professor Liepolt was President of the IAD from 1956 until 1980. Up to 1977 he was also the General Secretary of the IAD Office in Vienna. He edited the two monographs "Limnology of the River Danube" in 1965/66 which, for the first time, summarized the accumulated knowledge of the specialists from the entire Danube region. It was the special personality of Hofrat Professor Dipl.-Ing. Dr. Reinhard Liepolt, with his tirelessness, dedication, and eternal dynamism, combined with great circumspection and organising skills, which united specialists from the Danube catchment into an international committee. Always a matter of the heart, he worked for friendly co-operation and the establishment of human contacts, and thus he achieved the unbelievable in a conciliate way.
