Integral water protection, which aims ultimately at the function of aquatic ecosystems and includes qualitative, quantitative and morphological aspects, cannot remain just a promissory note. The integral approach mediates between use and protection of waters and should provide the basis for a modern water management. In the Danube River Basin, the International Association for Danube Research (IAD) can significantly contribute to such strategies.
