Three shallow backwaters of the Austrian Danube, with well-oxygenated sediments were studied to compare and determine the nitrogen exchange between sediment and overlying water. The release of NH4+ was higher in sandy sediments from Alte Donau in Vienna than in clay sediments from Altenwörth alluvial forests, except one site from the latter which had high release rate too. Such site had high organic content and low redox potential. Increasing NO-3 disappearance was observed in these same places.
