Precipitation indexes for small regions on the southern side of the Alps

The paper deals with statistical connections between meteorological variables (statistical predictors) and precipitation amounts in several small regions on the southern side of the Alps on a climatological basis (daily data 1971-1995). Normalised dispersion is applied to quantify the importance of the predictors and the best three are used to form indexes to quantify the precipitation amounts. The relevance of these indexes is evaluated on the basis of the percentage of the explained variance of monthly precipitation amounts - on datasets 1971-1995 reaching over 80 %. Since different precipitation indexes describe the precipitation of different regions these indexes might be used, for example, for downscaling precipitation simulated by climatic models.
