Affinities and palaeobiogeographic implications of Middle to Late Jurassic foraminifera from Jumara Hill, Kutch, India

A fairly rich foraminiferal assemblage dominated by vaginulinids and nodosariids was recovered from a Callovian-Oxfordian sequence exposed at Jumara Hill, Western Kutch, India. The assemblage has been correlated with the Jurassic foraminiferal assemblages from different localities of the Kutch region and other areas of the country as well as from certain neighbouring regions of the world. The comparative study suggests that the Jumara and other Jurassic foraminiferal assemblages of western India exhibit a distinct Tethyan affinity and, along with the foraminiferal assemblages of Afghanistan, Iran, Egypt, Somalia and Malagasy, was occupying the Indo-East African Province of the Tethyan Realm during Middle to Upper Jurassic time. The present study indicates that during Middle and Late Jurassic times, the Kutch region probably had a sea connection with Rajasthan, Afghanistan, Iran, Egypt, Somalia and Malagasy when these regions were covered by a southwestern arm of the Tethys, the Indo-East African Gulf.
