Ilia nucleus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura: Leucosiidae) from the Early Pleistocene of central Italy, with remarks on I. pliocaenica Ristori, 1891

Abstract

We report Ilia nucleus (Linnaeus, 1758) from the Emilian (Early Pleistocene) of Pomezia (Lazio, central Italy). A review of the morphological characters of this species showed that the samples from the Pliocene of Italy, previously assigned to I. pliocaenica Ristori, 1891, must be instead ascribed to I. nucleus. This results in a marked extension of the stratigraphic range of the extant species I. nucleus back to the Early Pliocene.
