Loligosepia (Cephalopoda: Coleoidea) from the Lower Jurassic of the Dorset coast, England

Donovan, Desmond T.; von Boletzky, Sigurd

Loligosepia bucklandi (Voltz) from the type locality is re-described. Earlier figures of the gladius show it as two-dimensional, but uncrushed specimens preserved in calcareous concretions show that it was strongly curved posteriorly. A unique example shows soft tissues preserved in cross-section, and these are described and interpreted. The animal lived in shallow, near-shore waters. The place of Loligosepia in coleoid phylogeny is discussed.
