Dardanus colosseus, a new paguroid from the Eocene of Austria preserved in its host gastropod shell

Fraaije, René H.B.; Polkowsky, Stefan

Examples of paguroid carapaces preserved in situ within their molluscan hosts are very rare. Here we present a large paguroid shield, with attached chelipeds and pereiopods, within the ultimate whorl of an internal mould of an ampullinid (?) gastropod from lower Eocene sediments of Austria. This new species of Dardanus represents the largest and best preserved extinct in-situ paguroid recorded to date and the fifteenth fossil member of the genus.
