Abstract

Single crystals of σ-Al2O3 have been studied to get more information about the real structure. Both X-ray-investigations and the videographic method have been employed to characterise the ordering scheme of the aluminium vacancies in the lattice of σ-Al2O3. A description of the satellite systems of σ-Al2O3 I and II is given and it is shown that the ordering of the aluminium vacancies in phase II can be described by means of intervacancy correlation vectors ॥ [100] and ॥ [101]. Phase I can be described considering additional correlation vectors ॥ [203] and ॥ [302]. Additional directions result from the interpretation of the 1st and 2nd layer precession photographs.
