Trend of anomalous birefringence in alum crystals: a new effect of the growth ordering phenomenon

Shtukenberg, A.G.; Punin, Y.u.O.

Abstract

The effect of increasing anomalous birefringence in the direction of growth from the seed to the crystal periphery was studied on the mixed crystals of alums grown from low-temperature aqueous solutions. It was shown that the change in birefringence could not be related to changes in crystal composition or in growth conditions. An explanation was suggested which is based on the fact that the degree of growth ordering at the beginning of crystal growth can be significantly lower than the stationary value for given growth conditions. The transition to this stationary degree of ordering during crystal growth leads to the trend in birefringence.
