Problems of stratigraphic classification and the definition of stratigraphic boundaries

Wiedmann, Jost

Abstract

The different modes of stratigraphic classification and the definition of stratigraphic boundaries are discussed as well as the stratotype concept. The preference of the biostratigraphic over lithostratigraphic and "chronostratigraphic" systems is stressed. "Chronostratigraphy" is regarded as synonymous with biostratigraphy and therefore abandoned. In biostratigraphy two contradictory type systems are available, the index fossil concept and the stratotype concept. Only one of them can be upheld which is logically the biological one. Priority is no principle of stratigraphic classification and should thus be restricted only to stratigraphical nomenclature.
