Abstract

The zone of Schlotheimia marmorea in the Lower Lias of the Tethyan Province must be regarded as Hettangian. References which seem to suggest Sinemurian are based on ammonites of which either the determination is wrong (or at least doubtful) or the Sinemurian age is questionable. In Southwest Germany - belonging to the Northwest European Province in which both stages were defined - Schlotheimia marmorea itself and associated forms of the marmorea Zone are clearly restricted to the Hettangian.
