The position of the Bashkirian/Moscovian boundary in West European chronostratigraphy

Wagner, R. H.; Bowman, M. B. J.

Abstract

The San Emiliano-Villamanín regions of northern León and the area of north-eastern Palencia, in the Cantabrian Mountains, NW Spain, combine to provide evidence for integrating the West European and USSR chronostratigraphic units for the middle Carboniferous. Fusulinid and other foraminifera allow a direct correlation with the Russian Platform, whilst mega- and microfloras are used for the link with Northwest Europe. Incidental goniatite records are helpful for comparisons with North America. The correlations via Northwest Spain suggest that the Bashkirian/Moscovian boundary lies close to the base of Westphalian A and that the Kashirsky Horizon of the lower Moscovian largely coincides with Westphalian B. A brief discussion is provided of conflicting information from the Soviet Union, tending to suggest an approximate equivalence of the Bashkirian/Moscovian boundary with that between Westphalian B and C.
