Global controls in the Phanerozoic sedimentary record

Abstract
Large-scale features of the Phanerozoic sedimentary record show a close correspondence with first-order cycles of relative changes of sea-level (Fig. 1). The latter result from changes in the rate of sea-floor spreading, which in its turn reflects the rate of mantle convection. Hence mantle convection initiates a chain of events largely responsible for many features of the sedimentary record (Fig. 2).
