Abstract

A new stratigraphic system of Permian in South China which differs from the conventional ones has been set up by the author of this paper. In this new system, the Mapingian stage is included in the Lower Permian series and the bottom of Montiparus zone is taken as the boundary between Carboniferous and Permian. A new chronostratigraphic unit - Xiangzhongian stage - is set up. The Qixian and Maokouan stages have been redifined with biostratigraphic characteristics, and their parastratotype sections have been pointed out. As the type section of the "Longtan stage" is diachronologic, it is not suitable to be chosen as the chronostratigraphic unit for the lower part of Upper Permian series, now the Sanyangian stage is named instead of it. Permian system is divided into three series with the development stages of fusulinids as unified indications. After all these modifications, the Permian system in South China is composed of six stages of three series, namely (in ascending order): the Mapingian stage and Xiangzhongian stage both of Lower Permian series; the Qixian stage and Maokouan stage both of Middle Permian series; the Sanyangian stage and Changxingian stage both of Upper Permian series.
