Abstract
Fining-upward microrhythms are described from the Upper Cretaceous chalk in the North Downs area of southern England. They are interpreted as the product of variations in tidal current strength, induced by the Earth's orbital cycles. The importance of these microrhythms in achieving a bed-by-bed correlation is shown and their use in assessing the completeness of the chalk succession and in age dating is discussed.
